COMMUNITY QUESTION
Where would you start with a kid with serious ADHD and learning challenges, possibly dyslexia?
BONNIE
We MUST always start by loving and accepting them exactly as they are.
Only then can we begin the long journey of awakening them to themselves.
The specific steps along this path are shaped by the experiences and responses of each child. This is a dynamic process for everyone who is involved.
Besides working with traditional professionals such as occupational and speech therapists and other developmental specialists, there are movement therapists, including some Body-Mind Centering® practitioners who work with children through movement. Much, of course, depends upon who is available where you live.
It’s possible that you might also discover insights in my book, Basic Neurocellular Patterns: Exploring Developmental Movement.
Whatever approach is taken, the challenges are easy to see. Seek deeply to discover and support the child’s interests, gifts, strengths, and aspirations.
